Lawyer Julia Hunter

In 2008, I completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Gender Studies from the University of Victoria. I have a particular passion for the pursuit of social and restorative justice. The focus of my work includes giving special attention to how networks of power shape people’s lives, experiences, knowledge and possibilities in relation to Indigenous and racialized identities, class, sexuality, age, ability, mental health and substance use issues.

I completed my Law Degree with Honours at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland. While living in Belfast, I was employed as a Research Advocate for the School of Law and gained valuable insights through work experience with a local human rights and criminal defence firm famously known for heading up the legal team during the Bloody Sunday Inquiry between 1998 and 2004. I was also published in The Verdict – an award-winning publication through the Law Society at Queen’s University Belfast that provides readers insight into contemporary legal and political issues.

In the summer of 2018, I returned to Calgary and interned at the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service. Under the supervision of Crown Counsel, I ran a number of summary conviction trials. This experience has given me a unique insight into the perspective of Crown Prosecutors.

Although I have amassed a significant level of insight and experience working with the prosecution (before and after law school), I knew I didn’t want to be a Crown Prosecutor. I am far more passionate about helping people with their legal problems than securing a conviction. Fortunately, those experiences with the prosecution have given me invaluable insight, which in turn enables me to better assist my clients.

In 2023, I returned to Victoria, British Columbia. Motivated by my passion for justice and an unwavering dedication to serving others, I embarked on a mission to establish a reputable legal practice. With a particular focus on assisting individuals faced with criminal charges, I wholeheartedly strive to help them build a strong and formidable defence. As I immerse myself in the vibrant legal landscape of Victoria, I am ready to make a meaningful impact and provide unwavering support to those in need of effective legal counsel.

Immediate Roadside Prohibition

An Immediate Roadside Prohibition, commonly referred to as an IRP, entails a driver of a vehicle having their license suspended for a set period of time due to an impaired driving allegation.
Our client was charged with assault causing bodily harm following an altercation with his then-girlfriend which began when she went through his phone while he was asleep and discovered he was having an affair. Our client and the complainant presented two conflicting versions of events which led to the complainant sustaining a laceration to the side of her head and a burst eardrum.

Upon being retained, we requested disclosure and began building our client’s defence. In doing so, we found several inconsistencies within the complainant’s story, as well as notable discrepancies between her statements to police and text messages she had sent our client before and after the alleged assault.

Our client pled not guilty, and we proceeded to trial. In our client’s defence, we argued he was acting in self-defence throughout the altercation. At the trial and after rigorous cross-examination, we identified further discrepancies with the evidence and the complainant’s testimony in direct. As a result of our advocacy and the credibility issues of the complainant raised during cross-examination, the Crown invited the Court to acquit our client prior to the conclusion of the trial.

Glowing Client Reviews
Our client was charged with assault in relation to an incident that occurred with his daughter’s then-boyfriend. The young couple had agreed to meet at a park to discuss their relationship as there was historical unrest between the boyfriend and her parents. Our client and his wife attended the park to talk with their daughter about the relationship which they believed was not the right fit. An argument ensued between the parties which turned physical between our client and the boyfriend. Upon review of cellphone video and further investigation, it was deemed our client had initiated the altercation and assaulted the complainant. He was charged with assault 10 days later.

Upon being retained, we requested disclosure and began building our client’s defence. We began negotiating with the Crown Prosecutor and pointed out multiple weaknesses in the case against out client as well as pieces of critical evidence that were missing. Namely, the cellphone video footage used as a basis to charge our client. Despite numerous requests for the video footage, the police confirmed they had not preserved the footage and were unable to produce it. As a result, our client entered a not guilty plea and set the matter for trial. We filed an application alleging our client’s rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms had been breached. Specifically, his right to full answer and defence had been breached due to the investigating officer’s negligent handling of the civilian video evidence which was the basis for charging our client. Ultimately, the charges against our client were stayed before trial.

Successful Result: Charges Stayed; No Criminal Record.

I received my Juris Doctor from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia in 2022. During law school, I assisted clients through the Indigenous Community Legal Clinic gaining hands on experience early in my legal career. In addition, I completed the Indigenous Cultural Competency Certificate to engage in cross-cultural learning opportunities and explore Indigenous perspectives on law. Prior to law school, I received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Victoria.

My legal practice is dedicated solely to criminal defence, appearing almost daily in either Provincial or Supreme Court across multiple jurisdictions in British Columbia. I am committed to building trust and confidence with all clients, ensuring their interests are respectfully protected at every stage of the criminal process, from bail hearings to trials and sentencing. I am a compassionate, yet tough advocate, representing clients across a diverse range of cases. I have a strong record of success and act on files involving assault, driving offences, theft, fraud, mischief, criminal harassment, sexual offences, and other criminal matters.
